Tourism Minister Champions Technology in Taxi Industry | Goa News

Embracing Technology in Goa’s Taxi Sector: A Vision by Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte

In a recent statement reflecting on the evolving landscape of tourism in Goa, Rohan Khaunte, the state’s Tourism Minister, emphasized the critical need for technology integration within the local taxi sector. His remarks came during a discussion in Panaji, where he asserted that the government staunchly supports the adoption of tech-based solutions to better serve tourists and locals alike.

Strong Stance Against Taxi Aggregator Bans

Addressing concerns over calls to impose restrictions or bans on taxi aggregators, Khaunte articulated his belief that such measures would be detrimental. "Aggregators are required to regulate and get these things out. This issue about taxis, which keeps coming up, needs to be closed once and for all, as it is affecting tourism at large,” he stated, underscoring the importance of innovative solutions in maintaining the flow of visitors to Goa.

Currently, tourists and residents can utilize the GoaMiles taxi app and the Goa Taxi app, ensuring that transportation remains accessible and convenient. However, Khaunte hinted at the potential for expanding this digital landscape, suggesting that the chief minister may soon consider the approval of additional aggregator applications.

Technical Advancements as Essential

Khaunte’s conviction in technology as a necessary component for the taxi sector is clear. He expressed, “Technology is required. There is no further compromise on technology." His determination reflects a broader belief that modernizing the taxi service will not only streamline operations but also enhance the overall tourist experience. His remarks resonate with the prevailing sentiment among local officials that fostering a tech-forward approach is key to navigating the challenges posed by the traditional transportation models.

Addressing Illegal Practices in the Tourism Sector

Furthermore, the tourism minister did not shy away from confronting the problematic presence of illegal touting in Goa’s tourism sector. Touts, he argued, are a significant source of chaos and unregulated activity, undermining legitimate businesses within the industry. “As long as touts remain in Goa, we will continue our drives," Khaunte affirmed, indicating a proactive approach toward identifying and dismantling these illegal operations.

By advocating for regulated, app-based services, he aims to create a transparent environment where both tourists and service providers can engage in a fair marketplace, free from the influence of unscrupulous agents.

Culinary Diversity in Coastal Shacks

In addition to addressing transportation concerns, Khaunte clarified his stance on the culinary offerings available at beach shacks throughout Goa. Recognizing the diverse array of tourists visiting the region—including English, Russian, and Indian visitors—he stressed the need for a variety of choice in dining.

“It is essential that we cater to all choices," Khaunte remarked, dispelling notions that traditional dishes, like fish curry rice, must dominate menus. By promoting inclusive offerings, he hopes to enhance the gastronomic experience for every visitor, ensuring that local shacks remain appealing and relevant in a globalized culinary landscape.

Collaboration with Local Taxi Operators

Moreover, the minister has urged local legislators, particularly MLAs from the coastal belt, to actively engage with taxi operators and encourage them to adopt technological solutions. Khaunte believes that cooperation between the government, local lawmakers, and service providers is crucial to ensuring the success of these initiatives. By fostering a collaborative atmosphere, he posits, the state can effectively usher in a new era of operational efficiency in the transportation sector, ultimately benefiting the overall tourism experience.

In conclusion, Rohan Khaunte’s vision for Goa’s taxi sector is clear—leveraging technology is not merely an option; it is a necessity. His proactive stance on combating illegal practices and promoting diverse dining experiences reflects a commitment to nurturing a sustainable and vibrant tourism industry. With the government’s support, local operators have a unique opportunity to harness these advancements, ensuring Goa remains a preferred destination for travelers worldwide.
